Carnegie African Fellow to Collaborate with FUTA on Integrated Waste Management

A Nigerian awardee of the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Programme and lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), United Status of America, Dr. Vincent Ogunro is to collaborate with the Federal University of Technology, Akure on the development of an appropriate integrated waste management in infrastructure in Nigeria. The collaboration is in conjunction with Professor Oluwapelumi Ojuri of the Department of Civil Engineering, FUTA.

Dr. Ogunro said the project is part of a broader initiative that will pair 51 African Diaspora scholars with one of 43 higher education institution and collaborators in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda to work together on curriculum, co-development, research, graduate teaching training and mentoring activities in the coming month.  He said the Visiting Fellows will work with their host on a wide range of projects that include controlling malaria, strengthening peace, training and mentoring graduate students in criminal justice, archiving African indigenous knowledge, creating low cost water treatment and also to deepen the ties among the faculty member between their home and host institutions.

According to Dr. Ogunro Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship programme is designed to increase Africa’s brain circulation, build capacity at the host institution and mutually beneficial collaborations between Universities in Africa, the United States, and Canada.

The fellowship is funded by the Carnegie Cooperation of the New York and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with United States.  International University-Africa (USIS-Africa) in Nairobi, Kenya which coordinates the activities of the advisory Council.   A total of 385 African diaspora fellowships have now been awarded for scholars to travel to Africa since the program inception in 2013.

The Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Fuwape commended the effort of Professor Ojuri and expressed his delight while receiving the Associate Professor.  Professor Fuwape said it was time to bridge the gap between Universities in the United States and Africa.  He advised Dr. Ogunro, who begins his extended stay in FUTA in May, to use his position as a fellow to facilitate exchange of staffs and joint supervision of graduate students of FUTA and UNCC.  He said the Management is willing to collaborate and partner with UNCC as long as it will be of immense benefits to the two institutions.
