SAAT CHARTS ROUTE TO BETTER SERVICE DELIVERY AT  RETREAT

The School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT) held a retreat and strategic meeting for Heads of Departments and Heads of Units with the theme: “Repositioning SAAT for Better Service Delivery” on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. While declaring the retreat open the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape commended the School for initiating the strategic meeting.  He said with the development in tertiary institutions, it was important for key operators to strategize to cope with the challenges of 21st century education. The Vice Chancellor said Heads of Units and Departments are the strongest link in the value chain of any University and play a vital role in providing strong academic leadership and creating opportunities for excellent service delivery in the University system. He called for commitment, transparency and effective management of the academic departments as part of efforts to key into the vision of the university.

Delivering the keynote address, former Vice Chancellor Professor Adebisi Balogun said Management involves dealing with people adding that for SAAT to fulfil its mandate in teaching and research there must be a commitment to academic excellence, effective management and leadership and excellence in service delivery. He highlighted leadership types to include pacesetters, autocratic, democratic, servant leadership, and transformational, transitional and charismatic saying that each leadership style will determine the performance of the followers. Professor Balogun said challenges abound in achieving excellence, but practicality in management and leadership coupled with accountability, time management and strategic planning will enable leaders achieve their set goals.

The   duo of the Registrar, Mr. Richard Arifalo and the Bursar, Mr. Adefola Adeshoba underscored the importance of creating a lasting impact as a leader and that financial regulations and accountability are necessary for effective management of resources and the safeguarding of assets in the University.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Dean, SAAT, Professor Taiwo Amos said “The idea behind this is to reposition the school into its enviable position in the University and indeed organize the committee of schools /faculties of Agriculture in the world. This is only possible if we see ourselves as a major stakeholder in the sector and do the needful at all times”.
