FUTA Student, Daniel Akinyemi, Recounts Experience on Trip to Ghana for Scientific Course

What a great honor for me and Simiat Adeogun to represent Nigeria at the German-West African Centre for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention One Health Modular Certificate short course at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi in Ghana.
I represented Nigeria as one of 25 African and German researchers selected for the One Health modular short course in Ghana.
I gained practical experience in public health, epidemiology, disease outbreak response, vaccines, and diagnostics. The program emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary One Health teams, professional collaboration, and networking to improve disease outbreak response, epidemic prevention, and preparedness.
This exceptional opportunity brought together researchers from various professional backgrounds and countries such as Germany, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Cameroon, and Ghana, among others. Out of a highly competitive selection process, I was one of the 25 participants chosen for the fully funded in-person session at KNUST.
The five-day course explored the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, emphasizing the importance of a collaborative approach within a One Health team to address the challenges posed by epidemics and pandemics in Africa.
The field experiences, including visits to the Kumasi Abattoir, Barekese Dam, Kumasi wastewater facilities, and a laboratory tour of Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), provided valuable insights into the critical points where human and animal health intersect. These experiences enable me to better understand and mitigate risks and diseases. Additionally, we conducted and presented a case study on a disease outbreak as part of a group project.
This comprehensive program has equipped me with essential knowledge and skills to address health challenges, taking into account the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
I am looking forward working with Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) to strengthen one health in Nigeria. Dr. Tunji Alausa
