Ogunruku Tasks FUTASU Executive on Effective Leadership

An erudite Administrator of the Nigerian University system and former Registrar of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr. Ayorinde Ogunruku has advised the newly elected Executives of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, to be hardworking and stand against any form of social vices in the delivery of their core duties. Speaking during the 2019/2020  Leadership Retreat for FUTA Students leaders held at the Premier Holiday Resort, Igbara-oke, Ondo state, Ogunruku   the role of student leaders is to be part of the  promotion of   world class education and best practices in students unionism. He said that a good leader is one who never gets tired of learning, a pathfinder, and a person of influence. Mr. Ogunruku stated the famous Harry potter quote, “The illiterate of the 21st century is not those who cannot read or write but those who cannot Learn, Unlearn and Relearn.” Hence, he enjoined the FUTASU President and his team to make good use of the leadership opportunity by being exemplary in all facets of their lives.

The lecturer also emphasized that a leader is one who has intellectual abilities and gets things done effectively. He urged the Executives to write down their Vision and Mission for FUTA and make it measurable and precise for easy execution. He further advised that as a leader,50% of one’s energy must  be used in leading oneself, 20% in leading one’s superiors, 15% for peers and the remaining 15% in leading and managing subordinates.

In his address, the vice-chancellor, Professor joseph Fuwape  enjoined the students leaders to key  into the ongoing efforts to make FUTA a global University  through the protection of  the institution’s brand image in their words and deeds.  He commended the Students Affairs Division and the Computer Resource Centre for the use of electronic voting system for the students’ union election. He commended the depth of the lecture saying he was elated to have Ogunruku whom he described as a first class administrator talk to the next generation of leaders.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Gbenga Onibi, while delivering his opening remarks, emphasized that the training was to enhance the smooth running of tenure as several issues bordering on the leadership responsibilities are dealt with. He reminded them of the need to stay focused on their academics as it is their primary assignment. “You are a union leader because you are first a student of FUTA.” he added. He advised they carry other students along and also re-admonished them not to allow their leadership responsibility becloud their vision of academic excellence.
