FUTA ALUMNUS WINS RESEARCH AWARD IN CHINA

Raheem Abdulkareem, an alumnus of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA has won the 2019 high-level Award of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The award which carries a cash award of 10,000 Yuan is given yearly to students who publish papers as first authors in top-ranking journals.  It was initiated to promote innovative research which tackles current challenges facing sustainable agriculture. Of the five winners for 2019, Abdulkareem is the only international student admitted within the last two years to have won this award.

The paper which won him the award is titled “Greenhouse gas emissions from a rice-rice-green manure cropping system in South China”, was published in Geoderma, a top-ranking Journal in the field of Agricultural and Forestry Science. The work was supported by a World Bank GEF project on climate-smart crop production, and provides innovations for enhancing yield while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from rice paddies. Improving yield and mitigating greenhouse emissions from agricultural systems form two objectives of the FAO’s concept of climate-smart agriculture. Since agriculture contributes 20% to global greenhouse emissions, the work represents a good effort towards addressing global climate change.

Abdulkareem obtained a master’s degree in Environmental Biology from the Department of Biology, FUTA in 2017 and won the Chinese Government Scholarship in the same year.  He is currently pursuing his Ph.D.  in  Crop cultivation/Agro-ecology at the Institute of crop sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) Zhongguancun , Haidian District, Beijing, China. The Vice Chancellor of FUTA Professor Joseph Fuwape has congratulated Abdulkareem describing his feat as laudable and a thing of pride for FUTA and Nigeria.
