The God-factor:  Accepted that the Federal University of Technology, Akure is not a University of Theology, my Sabbatical experience in FUTA suggests that God is not relegated in the University. I am bold to relate its success with its recognition of the hands of God in its affairs and as the success factor of any community.

While in FUTA, I was challenged by its Choir, annual Covenant Service, monthly prayer meetings (FUTA Prays) and the commencement/conclusion of all gatherings with prayers. FUTA also maintains the tradition of holding its Convocation Services (and Commendation Services in respect of departed staff members).

 

Awards and Reward Mechanism: Rewards for excellence and appreciation of services rendered/achievements advancing the course of FUTA are parts of the things that make FUTA tick. Being the Dean of the year, the University researcher of the year or the HOD of the year breeds healthy competition among equals thus promoting excellence. Within the Sabbatical Year, FUTA students who emerged as the best Microsoft Software Designers among University students in Nigeria and represented Nigeria in the United States were rewarded for advancing the name of the University. So also were sportsmen and women who excelled as well as other student administrators.

FUTA has a robust staff development programme which allows teaching, non-teaching and administrative staff to pursue higher academic qualifications. There are several Academic Technologists who are doctorate degree holders in FUTA as well as other non-academic/administrative staff who are on different post-graduate programmes. These are more articulate and more efficient in the discharge of their duties.

The Senate of FUTA has approved the Criteria for the award of Professor Emeritus within the 2010/2011 academic session. It may soon become the first University of Technology to award Professor Emeritus shortly!

A look at many FUTA Newsletters reveals many of the staff members who have been awarded diverse research grants locally, nationally and internationally. Staff members of FUTA (and in some cases with their students) undertake international conferences and workshops almost on a yearly basis bringing diverse linkages and collaborations to the University.

In 2010/2011 session, the School of Environmental Technology has agreed to undertake a mid-year staff assessment to act as an advisory appraisal for staff preparing for promotion. This is intended to sharpen the submissions of such staff and improve their chances of being promoted.
