GET REGULAR MEDICAL EXAMINATION - DARAMOLA, OSASAN ADVICE WOMEN

Women at the Federal University of Technology, Akure have been advised to avail themselves the opportunity of regular medical examination to maintain good health.

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola gave the advice at a health sensitization talk/screening exercise for women on cancer related issues organized  by the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Gender Issues in Science and Technology (CEGIST) in collaboration with the Ondo State Government.

 

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Dean, School of Sciences, Prof. (Mrs) IbiyinkaFuwape told staff present at the event to develop the habit of undergoing regular medical examination, described early detection  as the only solution to life threatening illnesses  like cancer.

 

The Director, Diagnostic Services, State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Dr. Stephen Osasan explained that cancer has no limitations and does not recognize status, age or affluence.

 

He stressed the need for individuals to clear every form of ignorance and superstitious belief about cancer which he explained had over time shorted the lives of people all over the world.

 

Dr. Osasan who noted that some forms of cancer, like cervical cancer takes 10 to 15 years to develop opined that the only way to stay cancer free was to partake in regular screening exercises to aid early treatment where necessary.

 

He listed some symptoms of breast cancer as painless lumps, discolouration of the breast(s), abnormal and bloody discharges, abnormal size difference and wounds that take a long time to heal.

 

About two hundred female members of staff were registered for the breast and cervical screening exercise which took place after the talk at the University Health Centre.

 

Dr. (Mrs.) Mojisola Edema, the Director, CEGIST hosted the talk/screening exercise.

 

MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE TO DELIVER FUTA FOUNDATION DAY LECTURE

The Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. AkinwumiAdesina will deliver the 2013 Foundation Day Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

 

The Minister will speak on Unlocking Nigeria’s Agricultural Potential to Create Wealth at the Institution’s new auditorium on Friday, 17th May, 2013 beginning from 11:00am.

 

Professor Adebiyi Daramola, the Vice-Chancellor of the University will preside over the event.

 

FUTA HOLDS TRAINING ON SPACE RESEARCH

The Centre for Space Research and Application (CESRA) in collaboration with African Regional Centre for Space Sciences and Technology Education in English (ARCSSTE-E) from ObafemiAwolowo University, Ile-Ife recently organized a two-day training workshop at the Digital Resources Centre of the University.

 

Declaring the training open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola commended the effort of CESRA in meeting the objectives of its establishment which is to anchor the University’s contribution to the field of space research and applications.  He further said the two workshops (Satellite Tool Kit and UNISEC Can Sat) are current areas of interest to any nation that is serious about the use of the outer space for peaceful application and developmental purposes.

 

The objectives of the training was to familiarize  first-time users with the basic knowledge in tracking the motion of vehicles; planning and executing satellite launch mission; evaluating feasibility and reliability of communication links, among others.  Also, it will expose participants to hands-on-training to assemble, build and launch microsatellites encased in empty can drinks, recover the satellite and analyze the data returned by the microsatellite and as well learn programming in C-language.

 

In his address, Director, CESRA, Professor Moses Ajewole appreciated the Vice-chancellor, ProfessorAdebiyi Daramola for endorsing   the training and for consistent support and contributions to the growth of the Centre.

 

28 FUTA ATHELETES FOR NUGA

Twenty eight athletes are to represent the Federal University of Technology, Akure in the forthcoming Nigerian Universities Games coming up very soon at the ObafemiAwolowo University Sports Centre, Ile-Ife.

 

At the 24th Zone B Pre-NUGA eliminations held at the LadokeAkintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, FUTA paraded 82 athletes for nine games with 28 of them scaling through in Athletics, Table Tennis, Tennis, Judo and Taekwondo.

 

University’s Sports Coordinator, Coach Michael Ajibua praised the efforts of the athletes and their officials in qualifying for the finals and urged them to step up preparation to bring laurels to the institution when the finals hold in Ile-Ife.

 

Coach Ajibua also commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola and his management team for their financial support which enabled the athletes to attend the preliminary aspect and solicit for further support.  He also promised and assured the University of the team’s better performance during the finals.

 

VC ADVOCATES ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, HIGH MORALS

The newly elected students’ union leaders of FUTA have been challenged to maintain the moral and academic excellence which the University is noted for.

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola said this in his remark at the opening ceremony the leadership retreat organized for the newly elected students’ union executive at the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo.

 

Prof. Daramola who described the newly elected executive as budding leaders warned against participating in cultism, examination malpractice and other social vices; saying that the University management would apply necessary sanction on any erring student.

 

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the students’ body for the peaceful manner in which the elections were conducted and appreciated the efforts of the Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Dr. KayodeAlese and the electoral committee chaired by Dr. David Oke for ensuring strict compliance with due process.

 

He disclosed that the University management had invested in different programmes for the students’ leaders on basic leadership roles, image making, public relations and capacity building for dynamic student unionism.

 

The Vice-Chancellor was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Adedayo Fasakin, who recalled that the University management had added value to the lives of its students by sponsoring some on international and national leadership and academic programmes to prepare them for the future.

 

He noted that the University had instituted series of scholarships and financial aides to indigent students to relieve financial burden and reward excellence.

 

Fasakin appealed to them to avoid conflicts which could present unmanageable problems and destroy the career of affected students.
