Students enrolled in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programme at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), have commenced their on-campus examinations, marking the close of their 100-level academic session. The exams, conducted at FUTA's campus, not only assess students' learning but also offer them an authentic University experience, bridging the gap between distance learning and in-person academic engagement.
The Director of the ODL Centre, Professor Sanmi Alao, explained that FUTA’s ODL programme is designed to break traditional educational barriers, making higher education accessible regardless of age, distance, or time. Through a combination of online lectures, assignments, and monthly on-campus tutorials, the programme provides a flexible learning option while ensuring students still gain valuable interaction within the University environment. After completing their exams, this cohort will advance to 200-level, while new entrants begin their 100-level studies.
An accredited initiative under the supervision of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the FUTA ODL programme offers students a full bachelor’s degree in computer science, with the same certification as their on-campus counterparts. Graduates are also eligible to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, provided they meet the age requirement.
The FUTA ODL programme is committed to maintaining rigorous academic standards while providing a learning model that supports diverse educational needs and circumstances.
